CANADIAN Paw Paw - Taylor
$125.00
The PAW PAW is North America's largest native fruit and was found growing wild from the everglades in Florida to the shorelines of the great lakes...one northern area had so many trees growing in the region, it was named Pawpaw, Michigan and the fruit became known as the " Michigan banana". Today the wild plants are almost extinct but there is renewed interest in the species since the US government recently allotted $20 million to research new varieties for their food, medicinal and horticultural value. Paw Paw is a small tree that produces hanging clusters of mango shaped fruit ( somewhat like banana) that matures its fruit in late October in our Canadian climate. The fruit has sweet, yellow, custard-like flesh described as having a "deliciously tropical" mango-banana flavour. Latest research is showing that the Paw Paw fruit is loaded with health promoting nutrients...you would have to eat a banana, an apple and an orange( all 3) to get the same nutrient content as one Paw Paw...wow!
With its large drooping leaves and dramatic purple flowers in spring, the Paw Paw tree has great ornamental appeal as well. Our Paw Paw trees have never shown any pest or disease problems and now research on paw paw leaf extract are showing promise as natural botanical pesticides. Plant in well drained soil and protect from strong winds and grass competition for the first two years.
After 50 years planting paw paw seeds from all over North America and watching them freeze to death in our cold -40 C winters...we have finally got a few to survive and these survivors are now producing abundant crops of delicious Canadian pawpaws.
The seeds from our best tasting fruit are used to now produce our Paw Paw babies( seedlings)... These "babies" grow very slowly for first 3 years while acclimatizing to our cold winters, at which point in time, we offer the best selections to our customers...hardy paw paw trees approx 50 cm tall .
Plant TWO PAWPAWS for cross pollination and hand pollinate the flowers to maximize cropping in cold springs.
Our seedling TAYLOR pawpaws are produced from our own GREEN BARN trees that survive -40 C Canadian winters to ZONE 2 ..... other Canadian nurseries resell pawpaw trees they have imported from warmer locations in the USA and thus survive only ZONE 5 or warmer winters
Order your spring 2023 pawpaw trees early as we will be sold out by the time spring arrives in March. Anyone who orders 3 pawpaws and pays for them before end of January...... will have a fourth pawpaw added for free
