Sugarberry or celtis occidentalis is a native species that gets little attention. It is an excellent replacement for the decimated wild elm trees with a similar look and wood value. However the edible "cherry-like” fruit is loved by birds and other wildlife. Native Americans used it for food and medicine. The edible flesh of the small fruit is sweet and tasty but the high protein seed must be crushed to eat it.
