Asian FUYA persimmon is the fruit sold by Costco … flattened firm fruit that can be eaten without softening. Eaten when firm it has no astringency and a mild(bland) flavour but let it soften and it develops more flavour…. but it never develops the deep rich sweet flavour of the fully softened CORA persimmons!

When a CORA persimmon flower pollinates an Asian FUYA persimmon flower then we can get offspring that show larger fruit size of Asian parent and superior hardiness of Canadian parent. When this off spring tree produces high fruit quality we can graft a piece of wood from the selected tree to save those superior characteristics….this grafted selection is NICOLA.  Our grafted Nicola persimmon trees are cold hardy to maybe - 25 C …so zones 6 and warmer. NICOLA is a self-fertile female persimmon that produces very large orange fruit that must be softened( ripened) before it is eaten. Grows well as a potted tree so can bring into garage or barn for winter in colder climate zones 1-5.
