PERSIMMON CORA or PESSAMIN ....SEE SPECIAL 2026

$189.00

PERSIMMONS are not all self fertile but we have listed  some below that are self fertile females. This means you can plant just one and get fruit. They fruit quickly in one or two years and are easily grown in a pot if space is a problem.

We sell these varieties of self fertile persimmons;

1) Canadian CORA Persimmon - when a cold hardy, female Canadian Taylor persimmon seedling is found to be self fertile we then take branches(scions) of this self fertile female seedling and graft it so to produce an identical offspring persimmon…and we called it CORA ……Hardy to - 35 C ......so can be planted outdoors in colder zones in Canada …maybe as cold as zone 2/3

2) Canadian PESSAMIN Persimmon. At one time there were many wild persimmon fruit trees growing up eastern seaboard of USA through to border areas of Ontario/Canada and the persimmon was called "pessamin" meaning "dry fruit" in Algonquin language...referring to the "dry puckering" of the mouth when persimmon fruit is eaten before it is fully ripened. PESSAMIN is a self fertile female persimmon ripening an earlier than CORA and with similar delicious sweet fruit once fully ripened. Also hardy to -35 C or zone 2\3. The bright Orange persimmon fruit can be left hanging on the tree long after the leaves have fallen..makes a beautiful site on background of white snow. And here is most interesting fact..the persimmon can freeze solid and this promotes sweetening (ripening) of the fruit. Great way to store fruit...frozen on the tree!!

2) Asian Persimmon- there are many popular varieties of these Asian persimmon fruit planted in the warmer climates of China, Israel, Italy, etc..Some can be eaten unripe and crunchy( called FUYA) while others are eaten only when soft and fully ripened to remove astringency (like Hachiya).
FUYA is a self-fertile female variety that can be eaten without "softening" .... more delicious if left to further ripen(soften) which concentrates its flavour. The fruit can be dried or frozen for winter use. The tree is spectacular in fall when the bright orange fruit hang on bare branches. Fuya trees can survive freezing temperatures down to about -15 C so can be grown outdoors in the warmer areas of Canada(zones 8-10) or grow them as a potted tree in climates Zone 5 and colder.......and then bring indoors for winter into a cool basement, garage or barn.

HACHIYA is an Asian persimmon variety that ripens earlier than all others we have tested. The fruit must be left to ripen(soften) fully to remove the astringency and the soft flesh then becomes deliciously sweet and tasty. These varieties are hardy to about - 20 C so plant only in warmer climate zones 7 to 10. …..unless protected to moderate the winter cold found in colder zones 2-5 (heated greenhouse). Other option is to bring the persimmon trees into a cool indoor space for winter once they drop their leaves. Both Fuya and Hachiya are self-fruitful and will give fruit even if not cross-pollinated.
