A PLUMCOT - GOLDSTAR

GOLDSTAR - our own farm research discovery !  Plumcots are a new type of import fruit found in supermarket plum section. These commercial plumcots were developed for California conditions and not the harsh Canadian winters. Plums and apricots are becoming more and more difficult to grow with climate change. We now find that all of our European plums are getting diseased and dying at a young age and apricots are getting hit with late spring frosts. We plant seeds from our remaining plums to get seedlings to research new fruit......one of these seedling offspring yielded an incredible tasty fruit.....which we named GOLDSTAR.  Wild bees must have cross-pollinated our plum flowers with some apricot pollen as this plum seed offspring has apricot characteristics in its fruit...hence can be called a plumcot.  We always hope to find a seedling offspring with superior characteristics to either of the plum or apricot parents...but rarely get this lucky...this was an exceptional discovery!

GOLDSTAR PLUMCOT trees can resist  - 40 C winter cold( Zone 2- 3) and even its spring flowers are cold resistant - this year we had a May cold snap ( - 8 C ) but the GoldStar flowers in "full bloom"  were not damaged and went on to produce a full crop of fruit. GoldStar plumcot trees have never shown susceptibility to any disease (in 25 years of  trials on our farm) during which time most of our other European plum varieties(like Italian, Stanley, Damson, etc) have all died from diseases like black knot. GoldStar trees reliably produce every summer regardless of the severity of the previous winter... abundant, delicious, golden fruit with sweet "apricot -like"  flesh. GOLDSTAR plumcot trees are self fertile but we suggest that you plant with another variety of plumcot for best cropping. Harvest fruit from mid August onwards. Plumcots are best grown as a multi-stemmed tree or shrub about 3 metres tall. Goldstar fruit can be stored for months in fridge and remain in excellent condition .... thus this variety has good commercial potential for both the plum or apricot market. We sell all our production to LUFA food basket company in Montreal.

All GOLDSTAR plumcot trees we sell are produced on our farm and thus acclimatized to our cold Canadian climate. Other nurseries in Canada sell imported plumcots from warmer climates and it is risky the first few winters until they acclimatize.

There is zero commercial production of plumcots and almost no plums or apricots in Canada …thus every one you eat from California is bad for the planet. We offer a 50 % discounted price on Goldstar plumcots this year 2024
