The Green Point Newsletter

June, 2009

To all friends and customers,

Thanks to you, our spring season has been a tremendous success. The nursery business has been growing steadily and we are impressed that so many of you are interested in growing quality fruits and vegetables. This summer we will make some adjustments to improve customer service and efficiency wherein an inventory management system reserves orders sequentially upon completion….. so send in your orders early!

All of you who bought trees should remember to put tree guards on them just before the first snow (to protect against mice) and those who bought less hardy trees (Zone 4-5) make sure you cover the graft with mulch before winter sets in.

We will pot some trees this summer so that you will be able to buy a limited variety all summer long. We will also be selling some trees during the fall this year. We now have over 40 varieties of citrus available such as limes, lemons, kumquats, tangerines, mandarins and much more. You can now grow fruit all year long (indoors and out).

Our hours remain the same, Saturday from 10am – 5pm for “drop ins” and if you place an order by email we can set up an appointment (based on availability) during the weekdays.

Our seminars in Peterborough, Wakefield (Eco Echo), Kingston and Wolfe Island were well received and we enjoyed interacting with all those who attended. We will be holding workshops and teaching tours at our farm on August 16th, 23rd and September 13th as well as October 4th and at Ryan Hayhurst's Farm in Clarksburg on September 20th. This is a great opportunity to see Ken in action and learn about a variety of interesting topics.

August 16th we are holding a tree grafting (budding) workshop (am) and a rare plant and tree auction (pm). Learn a great hobby or even a trade in the morning as well as learn about and bid on unusual and interesting plants in the afternoon.

August 23rd we will be hosting a seminar on organic, sustainable, permaculture gardening. Bring your notebook, that’s a lot of learning in one day.

The workshop on September 13th is geared towards farmers or land owners of all sizes who would like to experience our farm, see our produce and trees as well as learn our techniques. This event is a one of a kind opportunity whether you want to farm for pleasure or profit.

September 20th (Niagara Escarpment Organics) we will be speaking on topics such as permaculture and rare and hardy fruits and veggies. We will also hold a rare plant and tree auction. There will be an open forum where we will answer as many of your questions as possible. For info contact Ryan at Niagara Escarpment Organics neo@neoorganics.ca or 519-599-5136.

And finally on October 4th we are holding a workshop on grapes for eating and winemaking....  Learn all you've always wanted to about northern grape growing.

We will be adding information about each of these talks on our website in the next few weeks. Check out our site www.greenbarnnursery.ca for more info or give us a call at
to sign up 514-646-1340. If you'd like to set up a Seminar or workshop in your town contact us to find out how we can help you.

We now do on site consultations so that those of you who are interested in either setting up an orchard, starting a business or simply planting an interesting and diversified permaculture property can have us visit and help make a plan. We also work with corporations to plan indoor and outdoor food Gardens and orchards for your building or business. If you are interested give us a call 514-646-1340.

We would like to thank Andy Harjula, Andrew McCann, Christopher Mines, Brad Peterson, Pat Furlong Brownlee, Clark Day, Cherryvale Farm, Kat Elliot, Dominic Marcil and Beckie Foon for their help and support. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting those of you who set up appointments and dropped in to the farm. The diversity and enthusiasm each of you brings is always enjoyable and interesting.

Our Market is now open (Saturday from 10am - 5 pm) with limited fresh produce such as asparagus, strawberries, herbs and lettuce as well as new inventory of organic dry goods, drinks and cheeses. As the season goes we will have all larger variety of fresh produce. If you would like to order in bulk let us know lorraine@windmillpointfarm.ca  and we'll put an order together for you.

All Nursery customers who would like to see what their trees will look like in a few years are welcome to drop by on Saturdays and we'll be happy to show you some of the varieties we grow at the farm.

Thanks and see you at the farm,
