Testimonials

As a small organic garden farm looking to add fruit to what we grow, we consider ourselves fortunate to have had the help of the Taylor family at the Green Barn Nursery.  When many of us who are now farming were still in our cubicles, Dr. Ken Taylor was planting fruit trees that no one had ever grown in our climate, and spreading word of his successes. With decades of experience growing and marketing organic fruit and vegetables, Dr. Taylor is uniquely able to help guide a new generation of family farms towards self-sufficiency. His permaculture philosophy and practical techniques have greatly influenced our approach to farming.

Our new orchard and vineyard now planted, we've been amazed at the vitality and speed of growth of the root stock we purchased. Within just a few weeks, apple trees are flowering, Asian pears have doubled in size and the grape vines look like they will soon need trellising.

Thank you and we wish you and your family continued success.

We wanted to share the great experiences we’ve had with the fruit trees we have bought from the Taylor farm over the years.

We first planted a couple of Asian pear trees in our small yard about 7 years ago that bore fruit only 1 year after we planted them. They literally started as a skinny stick with a large root but grew significantly very fast. Three years after we planted them, the two trees would produce hundred of delicious, juicy pears. We would have to thin the trees drastically because the fruits were so abundant that the branches would sink so low to the ground. The fruits would stay ripened on the tree starting from late July and into September that we were able to pack them in our kids’ lunches for snacks when school started!

Last year we decided to install and in-ground pool and unfortunately one of our pear trees was smack in the middle off the way. We almost didn’t want to install the pool not to lose our beloved tree. We decided we would do it as late in fall as possible and try to transplant the tree to another part of our yard. The timing of the installation, early October, wasn’t the greatest since the tree still had all its leaves and was therefore not dormant yet.

The company that had the large excavator said they would transplant the tree easily but they did a terrible job. We saw that the root ball they dug up loosened up before dropping the tree in its new hole exposing the roots significantly. We buried it as best we could, watered excessively, gave it some fertilizer and saw it leaves all turn an ugly brown within a few days and it looked pretty much gone.

We were pretty saddened and convinced it would not survive the winter but still held out some hope. In the spring when all of our other trees and plants started to blossom and have sprouts, the transplanted tree showed not even a hint of green. This was in April and we checked regularly. We even had a few centimetres of snow and knew that couldn’t help. I called the Taylor farm and they assured me that it was early and that after transplanting a tree it could easily take several weeks more before it started up again. There was no harm in waiting they said. A week later (in early May) on a sunny day we saw the smallest sliver of green on a blossom indicating, amazingly it was alive.

It continued to produce flower blossoms, small leaves and even produced about a dozen pears! The small leaves was a good indication of the trauma it had from being transplanted but during the heat wave in July it got a new growth of full vibrant leaves and blossoms too. We knew the tree was healthy and would produce next year.

It’s a testament to the Taylor trees robustness that they could survive a drastic transplant and still even bear fruit. We’ll be able to enjoy the delicious pears for years to come. Our family is very happy.

Just thought I should say Thanks for the great service and quality you supplied me recently. Makes a change these days to find a company that gives good service

and supplies quality trees.  These have to be the nicest trees I have bought for some time, obviously produced by someone who knows their stuff. As a matter of interest, I have placed a comment on the Gardening forum I subscribe to, saying what a good job you do.

Many Regards, Dave
