Good day everybody,
What a fantastic fall season we are having thus far. All of our crops are running a little late (2 weeks or so) because of the summer rains. At the market this week we have kale, carrots, beans, potatoes, grapes, tomatoes, raspberries, pears, melons, onions as well as dried goods and there is a chance that that there will be some Asian pears available.
We have hosted some interesting workshops this summer and we are excited at the direction that many of you land owners are heading in. We have one last workshop left to hold at the farm this season.
On October 4th we will be having a workshop on grapes for eating and winemaking. Those of you interested should confirm ASAP. For more info go to the website www.greenbarnnursery.ca and check out the seminars and workshops section.
If anyone would like us to visit their town, business or school this winter let us know. Some of the topics that will be on the agenda are Northern Tree Crops, Permanent Agriculture, Grapes for Eating and Winemaking, Edible Landscaping and Permaculture and last but not least How To Make Money Using Your Land Effectively.
We have had some really good results with our Northbrite pear trees this year. They are yielding high volumes of high quality fruit. This looks really promising for the future of organically grown pears. The Asian pears are also doing really well and are producing abundant, perfect fruit. I have posted some pictures on the website. Follow this link to have a look: http://www.greenbarnnursery.ca/Newsletter-September-2009.page
We have started putting together the tree orders for this fall, as well as for next spring. Remember that if your order requires a substantial number of trees for next spring, it should be submitted to us no later than October 15th. This will make it possible for us to dig out your trees, so that we can get them to you as early as possible in the spring.
We are having an end of season citrus sale; all citrus trees are 30% off until October 15th.
I also know that a good number of you have either sent us emails with orders, or have requested consultations. I am going through the lists as we speak and will contact you shortly. If you have not been contacted by Friday, please send me an email or call us to confirm your order or consultation.
If you would like a consultation, it should be done before October 10th.
My family has been working for thirty years to try and make people see that we are heading in the wrong direction when it comes to food and farming. It seems quite clear to me that we have reached the point where we must make a change.
There are very few small and medium sized farms left; very little diversity. When it comes to organically grown produce, it’s even worse. I know that many small farms are trying hard but more people must get involved from the ground up. We really should change how we think and farm.
It’s been said a million times before and I’ll say it again, talk is cheap. Each one of us must take action and try and grow food for ourselves, our families and if you have land, for re-sale to others.
It’s very possible to grow food and make a difference as well as earn money. It’s up to you to make it happen.
Speak to you soon,
Steve
